Bellydancing
was in Layla's blood since childhood - her Lebanese heritage gave
her a natural feel for Arabic music. In Mexico City's densly populated
Arab quarer, she began taking bellydance lessons after becoming an
established samba and salsa champion featured in many cultural performances
and events.
A former National Netball player for Mexico, Layla had always been
keen on dancing and even during her intensive sports career, she regularly
made time for dance and had won many Salsa and Samba contests in her
Mexico City. She later left professional sports due to a knee injury,
which prevented her from playing strenuous netball, but still allowed
her to dance. She continud to study Middle Eastern dance professionally,
and added this artform to her repotoire - eventually teaching all
three disciplines - Arabic Bellydance, Salsa and Samba.
In 2004, Layla travelled to Egypt to study with Keti, accompanied
by her childhood friend, Aylin - a professional ballet teacher. The
two are now A-Z teachers, teaching this style in Mexico and San Antonio.
Although they live in different cities, they regularly meet to create
new A-Z choreographies when ever possible.
Layla teaches A-Z bellydance in her studio in Mexico City. |
